Hockey Prospectus is taking a look at the NHL division by division and suggesting ways each team should tackle the forthcoming trade deadline. On Friday, we continue with the Northeast Division.
Feb. 28 marks the NHL's trade deadline and every team in the league -- both playoff-bound and those likely for the draft lottery -- has needs to address. To prepare for the final flurry of transactions, we're going team by team to see which players can help fill some holes on contenders or provide some foundational stability for teams building for next season and beyond.
One statistic you'll come across in the analysis below is GVT, the main player valuation metric used by Hockey Prospectus. For a detailed explanation of GVT, click here.

Bruins overpaid for Kaberle. Chiarelli needs to do a better job of guageing the "value" of players.
First, he tends to overpay his players. Odd, considering that Jacobs stinginess has hurt the team in the past. The Savard, Thomas, and Ference signings (to name a few) REWARDED loyalty and team spirit but may have been slightly above market value.
Second, some questionable acquistions...Derek Morris. Money that could have been used for Kessel. Then he realizes his mistake and ships Morris out. In the end Seidenberg comes in (albeit at a higher salary than if he would have signed him originally instead of Morris).
Third, the Kessel trade for two firsts and a second was a steal. Then he "feels sorry" for Burke and sends Colbourne, a 1st and a conditional second. Unbelievable! Look at the other deals. McCabe for a 3rd and 4th liner, Ian White for a 2nd rounder), Brewer for a 3rd plus prospect)? I think that the Bruins should have given up much less. Then focus on signing Kaberle or Markov in the off-season. Those picks and top prospect could have been better used. AND NOT for Richards.
At least, Chiarelli is not afraid to make moves. The Kelly acquision was good. Peverley acquisition was Ok. Two very good face-off men. The Bruins are deep at centre. However, I would have tried to move Ryder (UFA) for a late round draft pick and tried to keep Wheeler (RFA).
The Bruins have a solid core up the middle with Krejci, Bergeron, Chara, Rask and Thomas. They have a chance to win-it-all.
Chiarelli absolutely overpaid. Burke, in trading Versteeg and Kaberle, selected his trading partners well. Teams who legitimately feel that they have a shot at the Cup and will mortgage more of the future to get it. They will always surrender more for a similar asset than a team fighting for a lower seed. As many have pointed out, Kaberle is better than McCabe, but the difference between them is not anywhere close to the difference between the haul each player was worth to their new teams. The difference is that the B's feel more strongly about their chances this year than do the Rangers.
